The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the only national trade association that represents all aspects of America's oil and natural gas industry. More than 500 corporate members, from the largest major oil company to the smallest of independents, come from all segments of the industry. They are producers, refiners, suppliers, pipeline operators and marine transporters, as well as service and supply companies that support all segments of the industry.

American Petroleum Institute University (API-U) is proud to coordinate with industry leaders to provide information to University of Phoenix to help identify areas where the oil and gas industry can benefit from additional training and education. In conjunction with existing programs at community colleges, University of Phoenix is able to provide four-year degrees in relevant disciplines, including Management and Sustainable Enterprise Management.  This innovative curriculum will help future and existing energy employees acquire the knowledge and skills held in high demand by the industry, and encourage sector workers to enhance their professional and personal lives through higher education. Together, University of Phoenix and API-U hope to support educational and career pathways for oil and gas workers; ensuring a qualified, skilled workforce.

    Credit for Prior Learning

  • Credit for Prior Learning

You may be closer to earning your college degree than you think. We recognize that learning also occurs outside the classroom. Because of this, you may be able to turn prior professional development training or certificates into college credit through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)*.

    Prior Learning Assessment

If you're enrolled at University of Phoenix, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a process that may save you time and money in completing your undergraduate degree program. It determines if anything you've accomplished outside of the traditional university setting qualifies for college credit.

Additionally, University of Phoenix is currently working with Institute-endorsed certification organizations and community colleges to create CRGs to help you track your professional development accomplishments. Incoming students who have taken prior Institute-endorsed certifications and trainings, as well as completed community college courses may qualify for college credit toward their degree at University of Phoenix. With PLA, students may be eligible to receive additional credits toward their associate's degree or bachelor's degree*.

Learn more about PLA by viewing a tutorial or participating in a seminar.

*Certain states limit cumulative degree program credits awarded through Prior Learning Assessment. For details, please see the University of Phoenix Catalog.

  • How it Works

If you think University of Phoenix is different, you're right.

If you've seen our campuses or have read student testimonials, you know we're not your typical university. We've transformed the way you learn by shedding the ivy covered buildings and crowded lecture halls. We know that things change—especially education and enterprise.

Here, you have the freedom to both work and earn your degree. Being a working adult used to mean you were locked into a life of 9 to 5. And if you wanted to earn a degree, unfortunately, most classes were only held during the day, forcing you to choose between putting food on the table and furthering your college education.

Today, the only thing you have to decide is when, and how, you go to school: online or at a local campus.
