CTEL Certificate Program

University of Phoenix now offers a graduate-level California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) certificate program through our Division of Continuing Education and the College of Education. Available only to individuals with a California teaching credential, this CTEL program is offered online and at select locations throughout California.

CTEL Courses Help You Complete CLAD Requirements

With our flexible scheduling and learning format options, you'll be able to complete your CTEL Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) requirement with the accessibility you've come to expect from University of Phoenix.

Our CTEL certificate program looks at effective methods and resources that teachers of English learners can use in the classroom. Teachers will also be introduced to assessment strategies for both literacy and bi-literacy development. Other topics addressed in the CTEL certificate program include language structure and use, language acquisition and theories, the nature of cognition, language development, home use of English Learners, and processes and strategies to enhance bi-literal skills of English Learners.

The 12-credit CTEL curriculum consists of an orientation course plus four six-week courses.

An Approved CTEL Provider

University of Phoenix is one of six institutions currently approved to offer a CTEL (California Teachers of English Learners) certificate program. This California Teachers of English Learners certificate program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and fulfills California's CLAD requirements.

This CTEL certificate program is designed to provide California public school teachers—at any grade level—with the knowledge and skills required to instruct English learners in the state's multicultural and linguistically diverse classrooms.
