Pursue your retail management degree and learn merchandising, purchasing and management
Shoppers unite! Whether you have worked in retail for years, or are trying to grow your already established career in it, a retail management degree may be just what you need. You can earn your degree one course at a time in our bachelor’s degree program. You’ll receive credit for relevant experience and have the opportunity to transfer credits previously earned. Upon the completion of the program, you’ll be prepared to take three certification exams from the National Retail Federation — Customer Service and Sales, Advanced Customer Service, and Sales and Retail Management.
Our retail management degree program will prepare you to manage the operations of a wide variety of retail businesses including department stores, independent and chain stores, food and beverage storefronts and pharmacies. Our curriculum, designed and approved with input from our Retail Advisory Council of CEOs, chief merchandising officers and directors, includes elements such as instruction in retail management, merchandise management, customer service management, marketing, organizational behavior, and personnel management. Our retail degree program also dives into e-commerce best practices, keeping in stride with online buying.
After completing your retail management degree, you might go on to work as a retail store manager, merchandise manager or purchasing manager. Retail managers oversee stores’ sales and employee scheduling. They may manage an individual department or store, or oversee an entire district of stores. Merchandise managers are often responsible for choosing looks and trends and setting product displays. Purchasing managers follow consumer spending habits — forecasting and anticipating what products consumers will buy and when they will buy them. They often negotiate with wholesalers, looking to purchase items at the lowest possible price and then help set the store pricing, creating a wide profit margin for the store.

Retail is a fulfilling, challenging career path but sometimes it can be a struggle to pay for school — which is why we partnered with the National Retail Federation’s nonprofit arm to award eligible students with the Dream BIG Scholarship —a program that has helped many students with tuition over the years.
Part of the School of Business, you’ll have access to talented faculty members who will guide you through the retail degree program. On average, instructors have been teaching 9.7 years at University of Phoenix and have more than 23 years of real world experience, bringing problems and solutions they’ve encountered into the classroom — and more than 3,000 of them have worked for Fortune 1000 companies or their subsidiaries. You’ll get lots of help and attention — the average class has less than 15 students.
