Are Job Perks Dying?
Are job perks disappearing? The answer appears to be "yes."
But the loss of flex time, free Friday bagels and other perks of office work also appears to have an upside.
CNN.com reports that though 2009 seemed to be the year of the cutback, the money saved by those cutbacks went to sustain employees' salaries and keep jobs alive. The article, based on research by careerbuilder.com, indicates that a whopping 65 percent of companies surveyed cut back on social events in 2009, while also cutting back on office perks such as coffee, ice machines or discounted vending and incentive trips.
But, is there another side to the coin? That answer may also be "yes."
Traditionally, MBAs, in addition to an increase in salary, have been attracted to perk-heavy jobs not typically found with lesser degrees. Business school graduates specifically target companies such as Google with its legendary perks and benefits.
That's still true, according to Fortune.
Though more MBAs are searching for jobs in the retail sector or other industries not typically sought after by MBAs, the vast majority of them are still holding out for, and finding, work at perk-heavy companies, Fortune reports.
In addition to an increased earning potential, an MBA is still seen as an excellent way to create a path to the dream job—and its perks.
