Careers That Require an MBA

While some jobs in business, management and organizational leadership can be performed without the competencies of an advanced degree, other positions require a level of technical skill and competency typically gained in pursuing an MBA program, either in a traditional format or in an online setting. Here are a few of those types of positions that may require a job seeker to possess an MBA.

Investment Banking and Fund Management

Money and finance are key components in an MBA program. Some individuals specialize in finance when pursuing an MBA so that they can target financial management positions. This may include working at banks and investment firms that require their employees, who may be responsible for millions or even billions of dollars, to have a particularly advanced understanding of monetary management and trends.

Management Consulting

The field of management consulting is fairly broad, and not all consulting positions require an MBA. However, when people start to consult for large companies, there may be a general expectation that the consultants have a level of knowledge that goes beyond the standard expert. Therefore, people who want to get into high-level consulting will typically need an MBA.

Executives

Not all chief executive officers and chief financial officers have an MBA. However, this is increasingly a requirement for people who want to be considered for the top posts of organizations. This is particularly true in large companies that must be very careful about who they hire to direct the future of their business.

Human Resources

A human resource department can be the virtual center of a company, as many areas of an organization have connections to it. Again, not all human resource directors need an MBA, but many companies look for people who have training in the field so that they are aware of issues that may arise in their position.
