Building Productivity in Your Building

Productivity is an objective all managers seek to achieve in their workplace. Without steady output, the work does not effectively get done and, as a result, profitability can suffer. Managerial decision makers who consider the several factors that impact productivity can often make changes that drastically affect output.

Design

Working in an aesthetically pleasing environment can go a long way in how work gets accomplished. Design factors such as the paint, carpeting, artwork and other decorative details can help make the atmosphere feel welcoming and, as a result, a pleasurable place to work.

Environment

The environment of the office can affect levels of productivity. Items such as temperature, lighting and ergonomics can have significant impacts on production.

For instance, Lois Goodell suggests in Inc. Magazine, "Specialize lighting according to tasks; this small bit of personalization can make working easier on the eyes." This is good advice because it should be considered that if eyes are overworked, this brings on fatigue, which leads to lowered levels of productivity. Similar effects can relate to temperature and ergonomics; comfort levels are worth investing in because these small adjustments can yield big results.

Morale

Another important environmental factor is morale. Employees who possess low levels of morale are likely to be less productive. David Javitch states in Entrepreneur.com, "It's important to note that contrary to popular belief, morale is not a cause, but rather the effect or result of many factors going awry." Managers who monitor levels of workplace morale can quickly identify and assess issues to get to the root of the problem before it manifests.

A leadership that continuously evaluates and corrects issues as they arise better mitigates problems and keeps healthier levels of morale.

Tools

Technology plays a significant role in productivity, and when the right tools and applications are invested in, this is invaluable to the levels of output. Correctly identifying the right kinds of technology to invest in helps maximize efficiency and expediency.

Often improving efficiency and output can be accomplished with a little attention to the office environment, a few adjustments and perhaps some expense; however, creating productivity does not have to be costly.

Employee comfort and happiness are pivotal to building productivity. Ultimately when employees feel comfortable in their work environment, are content in their surroundings and are given the best possible tools, productivity will naturally tend to increase. A little bit of managerial effort can go a long way, and this results in a win-win situation.
