Is Demand Increasing for Tech-Based MBAs?

Tech-based MBA degree programs are becoming a popular option for students pursuing an advanced education. In addition to the valuable and versatile knowledge an MBA offers, students who partner technology expertise with traditional business learning often find themselves having a competitive edge in the job market.

The partnership between the MBA and technology is a decision that can bring solid results in the future. As technical innovation progresses, organizations are becoming inclusive of adding technology for strategic and operational purposes. MBA graduates who possess advanced knowledge in technology will have these desired skills to offer their employers.

Increased job opportunities

As technology progresses and becomes more integrated into today's workplaces, there are increased employment opportunities. A report in Business Week points out ways executives are using technology to develop higher levels of efficiency, and in 2010 they'll be "looking to IT systems to help them cut costs and increase revenues." MBA graduates who have the knowledge to strategically use technology in business planning will find a good niche as they further their career.

Growing demand

In addition, most of a business' day-to-day processes, including those on the managerial level, already require heavy use of technology. Technology is integrated in various aspects of a business including but not limited to marketing, human resources, accounting and customer service. Even basic communications requires knowledge of technology. In today's work environments, the need for technical expertise is present and this requirement spans various fields and industries. MBA graduates with a technology concentration are good candidates to meet the growing demand.

Degree options

Many MBA programs offer concentrations in various areas of technology. Areas of consideration are technology management, information systems management, information security, business continuity and disaster recovery, programming, Web and network management, telecommunications and e-commerce management.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a significant increase in technology jobs, and their website states: "A bachelor's degree in a computer-related field usually is required for management positions, although employers often prefer a graduate degree, especially an MBA with technology as a core component."

Adding the technology component to an MBA degree provides job candidates with not only great marketable attributes but also relevant skills and knowledge that can be directly applied in today's modern and technical-centric workplaces.
