Which jobs can you get with a marketing degree?

Marketing is a field once traditionally tied to advertising; however, this correlation has evolved over time. Modern marketing experts are far more involved in the many facets of business and reach beyond product or service advertisement.

While advertising is a component of marketing, today's marketers must also possess versatile skills and knowledge that encompass various aspects of conducting business and/or running an organization. This versatility means that individuals possessing intrinsic marketing talents are good candidates for a variety of jobs, creating a vast realm of career possibilities.

Types of occupations

Marketing is comprised of a mix of science and art, which may make not only for a solid career, but also an interesting one. Job possibilities are many and include positions outside of the marketing field; individuals with marketing experience can work in a variety of industries because they possess a valuable background composed of many desirable skills that employers seek.

Because marketing is an occupational field that is utilized in all aspects of organizational management, the expertise marketers possess is needed within for-profits, non-profits and even government agencies. There are many job opportunities awaiting those considering marketing as an education choice.

Individuals with a marketing background are well-equipped to seek jobs in consulting, sales, general management, public relations and even finance in any given industry. Since marketing specialists are finely tuned to understanding people, looking at consulting positions, which help pinpoint organizational behavioral issues, is also a good idea.

A strong background in marketing can also prepare entrepreneurs to create a successful start-up and lasting business. Considerable research must be conducted prior to opening a business to ensure a viable market is available and a consumer need is fulfilled. Once the business is established, markets change and those with strong marketing backgrounds instinctively know how to adapt to change and understand how these changes could impact markets and an organization.

Valuable skills and knowledge

Today's marketers must not only be knowledgeable in promoting products or services, but must also understand finance, data analysis, consumer behavior, technology and even social media. Customer-relationship management is essential to business outreach strategies and establishing good communication. Marketers are well prepared not only for identifying their customer base, but also for designing ways to connect and nurture relationships, because they typically possess strong communication skills.

A well rounded business education, such as that found in a MBA curriculum, can offer all these basic components and more, but students have to make the effort to carefully choose courses that will prepare them for the expectations in today's marketing careers.

Pursuing marketing education

An MBA degree is a terrific complement to a marketing education. Most advanced business programs encompass degrees in marketing in their core curriculum, and many schools also offer concentrations in marketing. Graduates who become experts in the marketing field can utilize these valuable skills in many different facets of business.

Marketing is no longer a specific job. In today's business environment, marketing is a vital business function that spans across many areas of most organizations, enabling equipped individuals to handle the job and be prepared for a multitude of positions.
