How to keep up with teaching while pursuing an MAEd
Completing graduate school while working full time can be a major challenge. However, plenty of people are finishing master's degrees in education and related fields while maintaining other responsibilities, including teaching. In fact, many educational institutions tailor specialty programs for working professionals and the teaching field has been leading the way in this.
The basic strategy for completing graduate school is two-fold: line up support and stick to a plan. With support and commitment, you are likely to find that earning a master's degree is compatible with both teaching and administration, as well as rewarding.
Enlist a support network
When pursuing a master's degree, you will be working hard to attend classes, write papers and complete projects. It always helps to have a certain amount of support from people around you. Enlist the aid of family, friends and co-workers to help with family obligations and job-related tasks, leaving you time to study and prepare for exams.
Your support system can also provide much-needed moral support and cheer you on. While they cannot do the coursework, family and coworkers provide encouragement every step of the way. Don't overlook this important intangible!
Whenever possible, share your decision to go back to school with employers and families. Let them know how much you are counting on them. And when you have completed a project, passed a class and attained that degree, don't forget to thank them for the contributions they made toward your achievement.
Pursue an online degree
If you want to pursue a master's degree, consider attending an accredited online university. The online environment affords both flexibility and control over your schedule. You may be able to meet all your degree requirements without taking any time off from work at all. Keep in mind that an online degree will still require a great deal of time and effort. And for some, the online environment actually requires greater self-discipline than an on-campus degree.
Designate time
From a practical standpoint, pursuing an advanced degree means managing your time and being a highly effective student. At a minimum, you will want to set aside a block of time each week and plan in advance to rearrange responsibilities.
The successful graduate student anticipates scheduling challenges and stays motivated. Completing graduate studies is a universally admired and widely rewarded effort, particularly in the field of education.
