ARTS125 Pop Culture and the Arts

Course Description

This course explores the interactions between the arts, advertising, media, and lifestyle and cultural trends in contemporary American society. Familiarity will be gained with the various art forms and their relationship to mass media, personal and professional life, and in particular to how they contribute to the current conception of fine art and popular culture. Students are asked to examine current trends and cultural changes, assessing both the role the arts have played in creating them and the influence these cultural trends have on art itself.

Topics and Objectives

Overview of Culture

  • Define art, fine art, popular art, and artifact.
  • Explain how culture, elite culture, pop culture, ethnocentrism, trend, and fad relate to art.
  • Identify current social, political, religious, personal, and artistic trends.
  • Indicate the effects that trends have on politics, art, and personal lifestyle.

Popular Culture, Communication, Art, and Society

  • Examine the relationship between popular culture, mass media, and other forms of information dissemination.
  • Describe the impact of the mass media on art and enculturation.
  • Assess the impact of globalization on popular culture and art.
  • Identify the relationship between the media, art, advertising, and the formation of normative cultural values.

Print Media: Books, Newspapers, and Magazines

  • Identify the roles that the print media has played in the development of American art and popular culture.
  • Examine current popular trends in the print media.
  • Assess the impact of print media and print advertising on art, consumerism, and cultural values.
  • Examine the evolution of the print media and its future influence on art.

Electronic Media: Music, Radio, Television, Cinema, and the Internet

  • Identify the roles that music, radio, television, motion pictures, and the Internet have played in the development of American popular culture.
  • Examine current popular trends in electronic media.
  • Assess the impact of electronic media programming and media advertising on art, consumerism, and cultural values.

Art, Ethics, and Popular Culture

  • Examine the legality and morality of advertising methods and mass production of culture in creating and responding to the needs of society.
  • Assess the ethical obligations of fine art and popular art in society.
  • Determine the proper role of the artist in creating popular culture and the citizen’s responsibility and accountability in responding to popular culture.
