This course enables students to understand the process of conducting needs assessments, developing an action plan for services, implementing the action plan, and subsequent evaluation of outcomes. Students will learn the process of developing goals and measurable objectives, designing an individualized program for clients, implementing the program, and using ongoing assessment and evaluation of results to revise or modify individualized programs. Students will demonstrate competency in identifying needs, and mobilizing resources and necessary supports for assisting clients in meeting goals. Students will complete Module 10, 11 and 12 of the MHF training. (3 credits) Prerequisite: BSHS 385.

    Helping Process

    • Apply the strengths-based approach to the helping process
    • Evaluate the importance of maintaining ethical standards during the helping process.
    • Describe the phases of the helping process and their importance.

    The Assessment Phase: Components and Skills

    • Determine the most effective techniques to conduct an interview.

    • Apply effective interviewing skills.

    • Describe the process of recognizing and coping with stress, distress, and disorder.
    • Explain the importance of client perspective during the assessment.

    Plan Development

    • Identify how to understand problems.

    • Examine the importance of problem statements in relation to plan development.

    • Examine how a case manager and client choose services, resources, and supports.

    • Describe how to solve problems and set goals.

    Coordinating Services

    • Explain the importance of networking and collaborating with other providers.

    • Examine the role of the case manager in the referral process.

    • Examine the responsibilities of the client in the referral process.

    Monitoring, Service Provision, and Outcomes

    • Explain the role of the case manager in monitoring and evaluating direct services.

    • Examine the importance of client participation, circumstances, and feedback in service provision.

    • Describe the criteria for evaluating outcomes and determining future services.
