Students will explore rich and unique features of ethnically diverse populations and special populations and identify their human services needs. Students will become familiar with available local community services to meet those needs. The development and assessment of cultural competence as it applies to social service agencies and behavioral health professionals is emphasized.

    • Understand the historical, social, and legal aspects of cultural diversity.
    • Discover and explore each student's culture and subculture.

    Special Populations And Special Needs

    • Explore the special needs of the physically, mentally, and emotionally disabled.
    • Explore gender and the special needs of women.
    • Explore issues of sexual orientation and of gay and lesbian people.
    • Explore the issues and special needs of the aging population.

    Ethnic Diversity

    • Explore issues in the delivery of behavioral health services to African Americans.
    • Explore issues in the delivery of behavioral health services to Native Americans.

    Cultural Competency Skills

    • Explore issues in the delivery of behavioral health services to Latinos.
    • Explore issues in the delivery of behavioral health services to Asians and Pacific Islanders.
    • Examine and develop personal cultural competency.
    • Facilitate development of peer cultural competency skills.

    Cultural Skills In Behavioral Health Settings

    • Learn about cultural competency in agencies and behavioral health settings.
    • Develop the skills needed in delivering behavioral health services to American minorities and to special populations.
    • Understand the importance of cultural competence in behavioral health settings.
