This five-week course focuses on grammar review and writing practice. Topical areas include meetings and their purposes, vacation and travel destinations, urban living, leadership, health, fitness, and superstitions. Throughout the course, students will focus on writing skills related to specific situations and topics in an effort to improve written communication fluency. Learning methodology includes assigned readings, practice and review exercises, discussion responses, high-frequency online interaction with classmates, collaborative projects, and weekly introspective learning summaries.

    Communication

    • Contrast verb tenses (simple present, simple past, and present perfect).
    • Review parts of speech and sentence construction.
    • Identify criteria for writing course assignments.

    Travel

    • Utilize vocabulary specific to travel.
    • Focus on word forms, countable and uncountable nouns, and subject-verb agreement
    • Contrast verb tenses (present perfect and present perfect progressive)

    Etiquette

    • Identify appropriate behaviors in social and business situations, including the Internet .
    • Review relative clauses and reflexive pronouns .

    Leadership

    • Analyze attributes of a leader.
    • Compare and contrast managers and leaders.
    • Identify the principles of leadership.
    • Review if-clauses (real / future unreal / past unreal conditional).

    Health and Fitness

    • Identify ways to improve health.
    • Analyze dietary information.
    • Review modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs, and gerunds and infinitives.
