This course provides the student with an understanding of contemporary concepts of physical facility security and personal protection.

  • Physical Security Programs, Systems, and Technology

    • Describe the principles of access control and the types of access control systems.
    • Identify the types and functions of unauthorized access detection systems.
    • Compare contemporary authorized personnel identification systems technology.

    • Examine modern technologies in alarm and notification systems.  
    • Evaluate communication technologies and their application to physical security systems development and operations.
    • Assess the value of audio and video technology in relation to physical security operations.
    • Explain how to objectively deal with persons who attempt to gain unauthorized access.
  • Terrorism

    • Describe the mission of the Department of Homeland Security and the interrelationships with other federal, state, and local government agencies, and with private corporations.
    • Discuss incidents of international terrorism and their effect on governments, communities, businesses, and individuals.
    • Evaluate incidents of domestic terrorism and the success or failure of existing security programs.
    • Discuss concepts of political ideology and world religions and any historical and contemporary influence on the terrorist mentality.
    • Identify various weapons of mass destruction and assess the associated delivery mechanisms.
    • Explore contemporary theories and practices regarding the prevention and detection of terrorist activities on national and international bases.
  • Management Issues in Physical and Personal Protection

    • Examine current laws regarding discrimination and sexual harassment in the work environment.
    • Explore privacy issues as they relate to surveillance and intelligence gathering.
    • Assess the potential liability issues associated with physical facility and personal protection activities.
    • Recognize the need for effective policies and procedures in governing the conduct of employees involved with the provision of protective and security services.
    • Evaluate the budget implications associated with facility and personal security operations through a cost/benefit analysis.
    • Describe procedures for screening and evaluating job applicants.
  • Emergency Response Planning and Crisis Management

    • Explore the importance of maintaining an emergency response plan.
    • Explain the importance of risk assessment.
    • Discuss the importance of creating a Command Center.
    • Analyze the planned response to corporate crises and the reasoned managment of such crises.
    • Determine how to deal with the media in a crisis situation.
  • Weapons and Personal Protective Equipment

    • Compare contemporary technologies and equipment for observing, monitoring, listening, and electronically tracking individuals.
    • Identify the types and functions of non-lethal weapons for personal protection. 
    • Describe the types and applications of modern body armor, protective clothing, and related equipment.
    • Assess the various types of vehicle armor, ballistic plastics, and other equipment for use in cars, helicopters, planes, boats, and so forth.
    • Identify the types and uses of respirators, gas masks, toxic agent indicators, fire resistant clothing, and other personal protective equipment.
    • Analyze various types of firearms and determine their offensive and defensive capabilities.
    • Discuss the nature of various explosive devices and learn effective detection, protection, and disposal methodologies.   
  • Theory and Practice of Physical and Personal Security

    • Discuss contemporary theories of physical protection.
    • Explain effective practices related to facility protection.
    • Evaluate facility vulnerabilities to threats of intentionally destructive activities as well as natural disasters, and describe methods to minimize such destruction and operational disruption.
    • Examine the potential for property damage related to natural disasters and identify methods for the minimization of  destruction and operational disruption.
    • Determine the potential for property damage that could be sustained as a result of unintentional behaviors related to facility operations.
    • Discuss the concepts of threat and vulnerability assessment as they relate to personal protection.
    • Discuss personal protection concepts related to transportation.
    • Compare and contrast methods for protecting large and small groups of people at work, social, or other events.
    • Explore methods of protecting executives and their families at work, home, while traveling, and at events in domestic and foreign environments.
