This course addresses substance abuse-dependency concepts and counseling practices. Topics include an overview of dependency theories, major substances of abuse, assessment, diagnosis, treatment modalities, special topics, and working with diverse populations.
This graduate-level course is 6 weeks. This course may be available to take individually or as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.
  • Assessment and Diagnosis

    • Explore the DSM classifications related to substance abuse and addiction and discuss the limitations of the DSM classification system.
    • Identify common models and instruments for the assessment of various types of addictions.
    • Discuss the effects of comorbidity on assessment and diagnosis.
  • Impact of Substance Abuse and Addiction

    • Identify and describe the biopsychosocial impact on the addict. 
    • Identify and describe the impact of substance abuse and addiction on family and social organizations.
    • Examine an extended client situation involving dependent and codependent processes.
  • Intervention and Treatment Planning

    • Examine the counselor’s role and ethical responsibilities in the intervention process.
    • Describe various intervention models and theories of treatment designed to help the addict and family members accept treatment.
    • Discuss the role of self-help (12-step programs) in the intervention and treatment of substance abuse and addictive disorders.
    • Compare and contrast clinical treatment strategies (in-patient and out-patient) with those of self-help programs.
    • Describe methods of evaluating the effectiveness treatment programs.
  • Process of Addiction: Etiology, Stages, Models, and Risk Factors

    • Define and differentiate between substance use, misuse, abuse, addiction and explore the etiology of addiction.
    • Discuss the similarities between drug addictions and other forms of addictions (gambling, sexual addiction, food, self-harm, etc.).
  • Treatment, Prognosis, and Relapse Prevention

    • Identify and discuss obstacles to maintaining recovery.
    • Define the counselor’s role in assisting the client in maintaining recovery.
    • Identify and articulate components of a relapse prevention plan.
    • Describe special relapse related issues for a dual diagnosis client.
  • Working with Diverse Populations

    • Distinguish the special needs of diverse groups such as women, adolescents, gays, lesbians, elderly, and various ethnicities in the intervention, treatment, and relapse prevention of substance abuse and addiction.
    • Distinguish the needs related to schools, work organizations, and social groups in the intervention, treatment, and relapse prevention of substance abuse and addiction.
