CMP555 Designing and Producing Educational Technology

Course Description

This is a comprehensive course that considers the process used to design educational technology products. Careful analysis will be made of the various elements of design in educational technology including opportunities to evaluate actual developed products. Students will create media-based instructional materials and deliverables for targeted classroom learners.

Topics and Objectives

Planning Process for Classroom Use of Media and Technology

  • Differentiate between learning and instruction.
  • Examine dominant psychological learning theories and their impact on the use of technology.
  • Describe the basic categories of media.
  • Relate instructional methods to the use of a variety of media.
  • Analyze the steps involved in the systematic planning for the use of media and technology.
  • Evaluate selected lesson plans on the basis of the ASSURE model.

Visual Design Principles

  • Describe the roles visuals play in instruction.
  • Examine elements of effective visual design.
  • Relate visual planning tools to the visual design process.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing multimedia applications based on a visual design appraisal checklist.

Multimedia Applications

  • Identify criteria that are important considerations in purchasing computers for instructional purposes.
  • Examine the advantages of different classroom computer configurations (e.g., one-computer classroom, multiple-computer classroom, and the Computer Assisted Instruction [CAI] lab.)
  • Examine the disadvantages of different classroom computer configurations (e.g., one-computer classroom, multiple-computer classroom, and the Computer Assisted Instruction [CAI] lab.)
  • Analyze instructional benefits of using multimedia in an educational setting.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of selected multimedia instructional materials by applying appropriate criteria.

Online Learning/Tools

  • Define distance education and its evolving role.
  • Describe how distance education can be integrated into the traditional classroom.
  • Develop rules of Internet etiquette.
  • Examine copyright law in relation to online education.
  • Analyze plagiarism detection tools.
  • Evaluate e-Assessment tools.
  • Identify electronic teacher tools and their purposes (i.e., survey generators, worksheet generators, and crossword puzzle generators.)

Visuals, Audio and Video Media

  • Identify visual components in the classroom and their instructional purposes.
  • Differentiate between hearing and listening.
  • Describe the importance of developing good listening skills.
  • Examine common types of audio media used in the educational setting.
  • Identify the characteristics of common video formats including desktop movies.
  • Relate the use of video to the instructional setting.
  • Distinguish applications for in-house video production.
  • Examine copyright law in relation to multimedia.

Media of the Future

  • Discuss the educational trends related to media and technology that impact learning.
  • Predict the role of technology in workplaces of the future.
  • Identify advantages and disadvantages of wireless communications.
  • Examine methods to stay informed about developments in instructional technology.
