This course addresses the key elements necessary for effective academic writing in college. The course begins with focus on prewriting strategies and builds to drafting and revising essays. In addition, the course includes skill development at the sentence and paragraph level.

  • Completing the Essay

    • Apply the steps in the writing process to complete an essay.
    • Integrate feedback into the revision process of an essay.
  • Revising and Editing the Essay

    • Use sentence transitions and sentence variety correctly.
    • Implement writing tools to revise and edit an essay.
  • Drafting the Essay

    • Formulate effective paragraphs using topic sentences.
    • Identify appropriate types of supporting paragraphs for a topic.
    • Prepare a first draft of an essay using appropriate strategies.
    • Create appropriate introductions and conclusions for academic essays.
  • Organizing the Essay

    • Use adjectives and adverbs correctly.
    • Identify organizational techniques that help writers and readers stay focused.
    • Construct a topic outline for an academic essay.
  • Developing a Thesis Statement

    • Use pronouns correctly.
    • Create a thesis statement for an academic essay.
  • Planning Strategies

    • Demonstrate appropriate use of commas and apostrophes.
    • Identify strategies for choosing topics and subtopics to support the main idea for an academic essay.
    • Describe strategies for choosing and narrowing an academic essay topic.
  • Rhetorical Modes

    • Use commonly confused words correctly.
    • Identify point of view.
    • Explain the value of rhetorical modes in writing.
  • The Writing Process

    • Use correct subject–verb agreement and consistent verb tense in written work.
    • Identify the steps in the writing process.
  • Writing Basics

    • Use complete sentences in written work.
    • Identify components of good paragraph writing.
    • Determine appropriate purpose, audience, tone, and content for various types of writing.
