This course covers the skills necessary for effective communication in today's work environment. The course provides an orientation to basic communication theories and discusses the fundamentals of interpersonal, written, verbal, and oral communication skills. Emphasis will be placed on applying these skills and theories to group processes and professional situations.
This undergraduate-level course is 5 weeks. To enroll, speak with an Enrollment Advisor.
  • Written Communication

    • Describe how to select a topic for an audience.
    • Outline organizational writing strategies.
    • Explain strategic research approaches.
    • Use proper sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and verbiage.
  • Personal Communication

    • Describe the communication process.
    • Analyze how perception affects communication.
    • Describe how to enhance communication with language skills.
    • Explain the relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication.
    • Identify effective communication skills for the Information Age.
  • Interpersonal Communication

    • Identify effective listening strategies.
    • Analyze barriers to effective listening.
    • Explain essential interpersonal communication behaviors.
    • Demonstrate intercultural communication competence.
  • Group Communication

    • Explain effective group communication skills.
    • Identify effective group problem solving procedures.
    • Analyze communication strategies for ethical conflict management.
  • Effective Presentations

    • Describe audience adaption for delivering effective presentations.

    • Identify techniques to reduce the fear of presenting.
    • Demonstrate the effective use of visual resources.
    • Implement an effective presentation.
