ECH521 Maintaining an Effective Learning Climate

Course Description

This course examines developmentally effective strategies used in managing a positive learning environment within the framework of today’s diverse early childhood population. Topics include models of discipline, establishing expectations and procedures, motivating children, family communication, managing disruptive children, technology integration, and materials management and record keeping. Students will develop an individual classroom management plan for an early childhood setting.

Topics and Objectives

Today’s Early Childhood Classroom

  • Analyze factors that influence discipline issues within the early childhood learning environment.
  • Describe the relationship of family, culture, and society on early childhood classroom management.
  • Identify teacher skills that facilitate developmentally effective classroom management.
  • Analyze the guiding principles of a proactive management plan within the early childhood setting.

Building Student Rapport in the Early Childhood Setting

  • Examine the importance of mutual respect in the early childhood setting.
  • Demonstrate communication skills that support children in solving problems and making effective choices.

Establishing Expectations and Procedures in the Early Childhood Learning Environment

  • Identify the need for establishing standards of developmentally appropriate behavior.
  • Analyze methods of creating classroom expectations and procedures for early childhood environments.
  • Identify examples of teaching rules and procedures in the early childhood setting.

Models of Classroom Discipline in the Early Childhood Setting

  • Examine selected models of developmentally appropriate discipline.
  • Analyze the relationship between expectations and behaviors for children from birth to age eight.
  • Identify the use of consequences and redirection in the early childhood setting.

Enhancing Student Motivation to Learn in Early Childhood

  • Identify teacher behaviors that promote young children’s motivation to learn.
  • Examine developmentally effective methods for engaging young children in the learning process.
  • Discuss strategies to enhance student responsibility and social development within the early childhood setting.
  • Describe developmentally effective characteristics of a physical environment that engages all children.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of early childhood learning environments.

Working With Family

  • Describe strategies to encourage cooperation and communication between parents or caregivers and teachers within the early childhood population.
  • Develop an outline for a parent orientation meeting in an early childhood setting.

Minimizing Off-Task Behavior in the Early Childhood Population

  • Identify disruptive and nondisruptive behaviors of an early childhood student.
  • Compare and contrast disruptive and nondisruptive behaviors of children from birth to age eight.
  • Identify developmentally effective strategies to redirect disruptive and nondisruptive, off-task behaviors.
  • Assess the use of time management strategies to minimize off-task behaviors in the early childhood setting.

Early Childhood Classroom Management Plans

  • Examine various classroom management plans based on the principles outlined in this course.
  • Identify materials management and record keeping systems that facilitate an effective learning climate for young children.
  • Identify technology that can assist in early childhood classroom management.

Effective Instructional Planning and Assessment in the Early Childhood Setting

  • Analyze how short-term and long-term instructional planning foster effective classroom management in early childhood learning environments.
  • Apply a variety of instructional strategies and resources to address the needs of diverse learners in the early childhood setting.
  • Examine the importance of using assessment to plan instruction and its significance for classroom management in the early childhood learning environment.
