ECH533 Methods of Teaching in Early Childhood II

Course Description

This course provides a solid foundation in program content and methodology for the teaching of social studies, science, and mathematics to young children, including children with special needs. Curricular content, modifications, development of hands-on learning experiences, integration of content area standards, the impact of new technology, and cultural and sociopolitical contexts are explored. A foundation in effective teaching methodologies in the content areas is provided, including classroom management.

Topics and Objectives

Teaching Methodologies

  • Review terms and concepts related to teaching methodologies.
  • Identify techniques and activities to develop pro-social behavior, guidance, and control as part of classroom management.

Social Studies Curriculum and Teaching Methodologies

  • Identify the curriculum content needed in a successful social studies program.
  • Analyze how to integrate national and state standards into the social studies curriculum.
  • Analyze the integration of geography, history, economics, and social relations and civics in the early childhood curriculum.
  • Examine effective methodologies of teaching social studies to young children across a developmental continuum.
  • Design activities and materials in social studies in order to develop social behavior, affective skills, and personality.

Science Curriculum and Teaching Methodologies

  • Identify the curriculum content needed in a successful science program.
  • Analyze how to integrate national and state standards into the science curriculum.
  • Examine activities that allow young children to question, explore, make observations, and reach conclusions.
  • Examine effective methodologies of teaching science to young children across a developmental continuum.
  • Analyze how to use children's curiosity to design activities and materials that develop the skill of scientific inquiry and scientific disposition.

Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching Methodologies

  • Identify the curriculum content needed in a successful mathematics program.
  • Analyze how to integrate national and state standards into the mathematics curriculum.
  • Identify the mathematics concepts and skills that are developmentally appropriate for young children.
  • Examine effective methodologies of teaching mathematics to young children across a developmental continuum.
  • Design educational activities and materials for mathematics.

Application of Technology

  • Examine the use of appropriate social studies, science, and mathematics software for young children.
  • Analyze criteria for the selection of appropriate software for different age groups.
  • Identify different media and technology (such as the Internet, DVDs, or CDs) to use as a teaching strategy in early childhood education.
