Course Description

This course examines the roles and functions of the principalship and explores educational leadership. Research, theory, and systemic change are studied and integrated to develop principals who are collaborative instructional leaders for schools of the 21st century.

Topics and Objectives

Definition of the Principalship

  • Describe the roles and functions of the principalship in integrating the school's vision and mission.

Leadership in the Context of the Learning Community

  • Identify the various stakeholders of a learning community.
  • Compare and contrast the various learning community models.
  • Identify the qualities of high-performance organizations.

Decision Making and Problem Solving

  • Identify the benefits of collaborative decision making and problem solving.
  • Compare and contrast techniques for consensus decision making and problem solving.
  • Examine issues that are principal decisions versus group consensus and decisions.
  • Explore effective delegation of responsibilities.

Site-based Management

  • Define site-based management.
  • Describe the components of site-based management and discuss its implications.

Change Process

  • Explain the nature of organizational change.
  • Investigate strategies to manage change in the school setting.

Curriculum and Instruction - Student and Staff Development

  • Compare and contrast current curriculum models and staff development strategies that improve student learning and are inclusive of technological advances.
  • Compare and contrast instructional designs and strategies inclusive of technological advances.

Student Services

  • Recommend procedures and structures for student services.

Diversity Appreciation and Multicultural Education

  • Identify multiculturalism in the educational setting specifically related to curriculum, instruction, and human resources development.
  • Explore ways to promote appreciation of diversity in the school setting.

Business Management

  • Identify the principal's role in managing the budget at a school level.
  • Identify technology applications for school management.

Communication and Marketing

  • Identify techniques for internal and external communication.
  • Analyze effective marketing techniques.
