This course emphasizes the practical application of human relations in the educational setting. The course focuses on building an awareness of diversity, relating effectively with all groups in a pluralistic society, building respect for human dignity and individual rights, dealing with dehumanizing biases, and translating knowledge of human relations into techniques that result in positive experiences for students.

  • Awareness and Understanding of Subgroups

    • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the values, lifestyles, contributions, and history of subgroups in our pluralistic society.
    • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the values, lifestyles, contributions, and history of subgroups in our pluralistic society.

    • Identify ways to relate effectively to other individuals and various subgroups other than one's own.
  • Basics of Human Relations and Multicultural Education

    • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts and vocabulary associated with the study of human relations and multicultural education.
  • Bias

    • Describe how educators can deal with dehumanizing biases and the impact that such biases have on interpersonal relations and instructional materials.
    • Recognize dehumanizing biases such as sexism, racism, prejudice, and discrimination and the impact that such biases have on interpersonal relations.
    • Recognize the ways in which dehumanizing biases may be reflected in instructional materials.
  • Serving Diverse Students and Families

    • Translate knowledge of human relations into attitudes, skills, and techniques which will result in favorable learning experiences for students.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of human diversity and individual rights.
    • Develop activities that foster respect for human dignity.
    • Examine federal and state civil rights legislation that impacts students.
