This course focuses on leadership strategies to promote safe school environments. Strategies to resolve conflict, build community partnerships, promote a positive culture, and create crisis plans are explored. Participants generate ideas, plans, and tools for resolving violence in schools.

  • Planning for a Safe School

    • Create plans to foster positive relationships among stakeholders in schools.

    • Develop a proactive program to create a positive school culture.

    • Develop an effective crisis management plan.
    • Describe how to improve diverse interactions among students, staff, the district, and the community.
  • The Role of the Educator

    • Propose classroom strategies that build a respectful culture.

    • Create a management plan to promote a safe classroom environment.

    • Evaluate character programs that relate to the prevention of school violence.

  • The School Community

    • Describe the roles of the school community in preventing violence.
    • Recommend steps to involve parents and communities in schools.

    • Evaluate programs used by schools nationwide to alleviate school violence.
    • Recommend resolution strategies for conflict.
  • Factors That Contribute to School Violence

    • Determine what research indicates about the effects of school violence on a school's culture.

    • Explain research-based strategies that schools can implement to prevent violence.
    • Define a safe school.
