In this course, learners will study the contexts, systems, and purposes of the community college within the higher education environment. The origin of community colleges within the U.S. and their migration to other systems of higher education will be explored. Both academic and vocational aspects of community college curriculum will be investigated within the context of purposes. The course will culminate with an investigation into the community college.

Course Competencies

  • Examine the historic development and philosophical foundations of the community college. 
  • Examine the relationship between institutional mission, instructional services, and student population in 2-year institutions.
  • Analyze the basic governance, organizational, and administrative structures in the community college. 
  • Examine ethical issues related to community college leadership. 
  • Research a topic of interest related to the community college.
