This course provides an overview of the physical education and health state and national standards and provides a context for how these are addressed in elementary schools and classrooms. Instructional approaches for the integration of physical education and health with other content areas are explored.
This undergraduate-level course is 5 weeks. This course may be available to take individually or as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.

    • Examine various assessments in health and physical education.
    • Create an assessment to measure stated objectives of a lesson.

    • Identify the main content areas in health education.
    • Develop a health education lesson plan.

    • Identify the areas addressed in the national physical education standards.
    • Examine the importance of physical education within the elementary curriculum.
    • Develop a physical education lesson plan.
  • Health Education National and State Standards

    • Examine national and state standards for health education.
  • Historical Perspective of Health Education

    • Define health and wellness.
    • Summarize the historical development of health education in the United States.
    • Identify school health services and practices.
    • Explain why health education is important in the elementary curriculum.
  • Historical Perspective of Physical Education

    • Define fitness.
    • Define physical education.
    • Summarize the historical development of physical education in the United States.
    • Explain why physical education is important in the elementary curriculum.
  • Integrating Technology in Health Education and Physical Education Lessons

    • Develop ways in which technology can be used in health education and physical education lesson plans.
  • Integration of Health and Physical Education With Other Content Areas

    • Create an activity that integrates health or physical education with another content area.
    • Explain how health and physical education can be integrated into the elementary curriculum.
  • Physical Education National and State Standards

    • Examine national and state standards for physical education.
  • Role of the Classroom Teacher as a Movement Educator

    • Summarize the role of an elementary classroom teacher as a movement educator.
    • Review the benefits of recess in the educational process and the role of the classroom teacher in recess.
    • Identify how students can learn social concepts through movement.
    • Identify strategies for motivating students to participate in physical education.
  • Strategies for Teaching Health Education and Physical Education in the Classroom to Diverse Learners

    • Explore various learning strategies for integrating health education and physical education.
    • Identify methods and strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
