ENG125 Literature in Society
Course Description
This course introduces themes in literature and provides guided study and practice in reflecting on themes which describe the human experience across cultural and societal boundaries. The course includes readings from literature in different genres and cultures. Students will study the literature in thematic units and be asked to make connections to their own lives and cultures.

Elements of Literature—Stories
- Explain writer’s strategies for conveying ideas through stories.
- Describe the theme of a story.
Active and Responsive Reading
- Demonstrate what it means to be an active, responsive reader.
Elements of Literature—Poetry
- Explain how literary conventions and poetic devices help convey the meaning of a poem.
- Explain the role of the imagination in writing and reading poetry.
Elements of Literature—Drama
- Explain the literary conventions and devices of drama.
- Determine how playwrights and readers create meaning in drama.
- Explain the role of the imagination in writing and reading drama.
Elements of Literature—Nonfiction
- Explain the literary conventions and devices of nonfiction.
- Determine how authors and readers create meaning in nonfiction.
- Explain the role of the imagination in writing and reading nonfiction.
Comparing Literature
- Draw connections among conventions and devices used in literary genres.
