Introduction To Academic Writing –

This course develops the essential skills used in writing effective university-level essays. Students study the composition process and practice the skills used at each of its stages. Emphasis is placed on essay organization. Individual topics studied range from rhetorical strategies such as narrative, cause and effect, and comparison, to specific techniques such as writing good thesis statements and organizing paragraphs. This course addresses the mechanics of writing, introduces the University of Phoenix Writing & Style Guidelines, which are consistent with APA guidelines, and reviews fundamental grammar rules.
This undergraduate-level course is 5 weeks.
This course may be available to

Essay Organization
- Identify and apply the structural components of effective essays.
- Practice developing strong, clear thesis statements.
- Develop paragraphs which use topic sentences, supporting ideas, and transitions effectively.
- Apply specialized organizational strategies for introductions and conclusions.

Formats for Papers
- Examine elements of the University of Phoenix Writing & Style Guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper citing and referencing techniques in papers.

Grammar/ Punctuation/ Mechanics/ Style
- Demonstrate the use of proper sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
- Demonstrate effective word choice and style to match the rhetorical situation (purpose, audience, topic, and writing strategy).
- Demonstrate the qualities of clarity, concreteness, completeness, conciseness, coherence, and cohesion in an essay.

Rhetorical Strategies
- Explore various rhetorical strategies (narration, description, illustration, classification, process analysis, comparison/contrast, cause and effect, and persuasion/argument).
- Practice various rhetorical strategies for essays (narration, comparison/contrast, cause and effect, and persuasion/argument).
- Analyze published essays for rhetorical elements, principles of organization, and to evaluate how well their rhetorical strategies address their situations.

The Writing Process
- Define the steps involved in the writing process (pre-writing, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading, and formatting), and explain the function of each step.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform each step involved in the writing process.
- Explain how the writing process applies to team writing.
