This course is an introduction to the regulatory aspects of providing health care services. Students will become familiar with state and federal health regulations. Emphasis is placed on various contemporary characteristics regarding the laws and ethics of health care delivery and the rules that impact health care employment.

Law and Medicine

  • Explain actions that negatively affect medical record creditability.
  • Explain the reasons for restricting access to health records.
  • Determine appropriate personnel access to health records.

Privacy and Confidentiality

  • Summarize the privacy requirements of HIPAA.
  • Compare and contrast privacy and confidentiality.
  • Describe the limits of confidentiality.

Basics of Ethics in Health Care

  • Distinguish between laws, morals, and ethics.
  • Explain the ethical challenges of resource scarcity in health care.

Ethical Dilemmas

  • Differentiate between personal and professional ethics.

Influences on the Health Care Industry
