Health Care Communication Strategies –

This course offers students the foundational knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in a variety of health care workplace settings. Students will review basic medical terminology; discuss the influences of gender and culture; examine channels of communication, including the development of interpersonal and technology-related communication; and the impact of consumer and interdisciplinary communication.

  • Current and Future Change in Communication

    • Describe the changing role of social media in health care.
    • Recognize why communication campaigns adapt over time. 
  • Communications in Emergencies

    • Analyze the media opportunities during both a management crisis and a management success.
    • Explain the differences in communication processes in crisis situations.
  • Communication and Information Technology

    • Describe effective uses of technology for enhancing communications.
    • Compare various technologies affecting communication.
  • Communication Challenges

    • Explain common obstacles to successful group communication.
    • Identify examples of external communication challenges with private and public sectors.
    • Determine the internal communication challenges in a health care organization.
  • Communication Channels in a Variety of Organizations

    • Identify how regulatory issues influence communication in health care organizations.
    • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of communication in health care organizations.
  • Introduction to Health Care Communication

    • Describe the changing roles and applications of health care communication
    • Identify basic rules for successful health care communication.
    • Identify basic elements in the communication process.
