The course explores fundamental concepts of management theory as applied to healthcare. Students will examine the organizational structure of the health care delivery system and administrative processes such as planning, problem solving, decision making, and quality productivity improvement. Emphasis will also be placed on the major issues and problem areas confronting health service administrators.

  • Renewing the Organization

    • Identify recent changes in management roles in relation to local and national trends
    • Discuss factors and influences that are likely to impact managers’ roles in the next decade
    • Discuss how organizations maintain currency and competitive advantage through renewal of the organization
    • Determine benefits and challenges of internal/external strategic alliances
  • Management Theory

    • Discuss contemporary management theories in relation to their application in health care.
    • Discuss influences upon the changing roles and scope of managers within organizations.
    • Describe the scope of accountability of managers within health care organizations.
    • Explore leadership theories and identify key attributes of effective leaders.
  • Issues and Challenges

    • Identify effective conflict resolution strategies
    • Examine various techniques of conflict resolution to include negotiation and mediation
    • Discuss the role of the manager in relation to conflict resolution
  • Administrative Processes

    • Explore the concept of the learning organization and the role of managers within such organizations
    • Identify ways that evidence and date-driven decision making is used to enhance interdisciplinary managerial effectiveness
    • Describe how service delivery is coordinated and communicated across departments within a complex organizational structure
    • Examine the role of the manager in relation to accountability to the department, to the team, and to the organization
  • Organizational Structure

    • Assess the role of internal and external factors in relation to organizational structure and work design
    • Examine the relationship between organizational structure, accountability, and service delivery
    • Identify effective management and motivational theories in relation to problem-solving
