This course is designed to provide the nurse practitioner student with the information and skills to initiate and monitor drug therapy. This course will integrate advanced knowledge regarding the clinical application of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, techniques and methods of drug prescribing, approaches to data collection, and problem solving with discussions about drug therapy for common acute and chronic diseases. Emphasis will be on the practical application of important concepts used in clinical practice for clients across the lifespan.

Topics and Objectives

Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics
- Distinguish between the basic concepts of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics that are applied to pharmacotherapeutics.
- Explain the concept of, and potential for, drug interactions.
- Differentiate between the three distinctive types of adverse drug reactions.
Prescribing Medications
- Identify elements of a written prescription.
Drug Therapy Decision Making for Infectious and Communicable Diseases
- Associate classifications of antiinfective agents with antibiotic classes.
- Evaluate antimicrobial selection according to host and drug factors.
- Evaluate diagnostic studies as tools to monitor and determine end points of therapy for infectious disease.
- Identify age-appropriate immunizations and immunization schedules.
Drug Therapy Decision Making for the Integumentary System
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for skin disease based on evidence-based guidelines.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for drug therapy for skin disease.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes, and frequency of administration of medications to treat skin disorders based on relevant individual client parameters.
- Evaluate possible uses of vitamins, herbal supplements, and over-the-counter medications as they relate to skin disease management.
Drug Therapy Decision Making for the Hematologic System
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for treatment of blood disorders.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for drug therapy for blood disorders.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes and frequency of administration for blood disorders based on relevant individual client parameters.
- Evaluate possible uses of vitamins and herbal supplements as they relate to disease management for blood disorders.
Drug Therapy Decision Making for Respiratory and EENT Disorders
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for respiratory and EENT diseases based on evidence-based guidelines.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for drug therapy for respiratory and EENT diseases.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes, and frequency of administration of respiratory and EENT medications based on relevant individual client parameters.
- Evaluate possible uses of vitamins and herbal supplements as they relate to respiratory and EENT disease management.
Drug Therapy Decision Making for the Cardiovascular System
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for cardiovascular diseases from evidence-based guidelines.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for cardiovascular drug therapy.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes, and frequency of administration of cardiovascular medications based on relevant individual client parameters.
- Evaluate possible uses of vitamins and herbal supplements as they relate to cardiovascular disease management.
- Assess current clinical guidelines for prevention and disease management of cardiovascular disorders.

Drug Therapy Decision Making for Gynecological and Genitourinary Disorders
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for gynecological and contraceptives from evidence-based guidelines.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for drug therapy for gynecological and genitourinary disorders and current contraceptive strategies.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes of administration, and frequency of administration of medications to treat gynecological disease and genitourinary disorders based on relevant individual client parameters.
- Evaluate possible uses of vitamins and herbal supplements as they relate to gynecological disease management.
Drug Therapy Decision Making for Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for gastrointestinal diseases based on evidence-based guidelines.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for drug therapy for gastrointestinal diseases.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes and frequency of administration of medications to treat gastrointestinal disorders based on relevant individual client parameters.

Drug Therapy Decision Making for the Musculoskeletal System
- Evaluate and recommend drug therapies for musculoskeletal diseases based on evidence-based guidelines.
- Identify appropriate monitoring, patient education strategies, and clinical end points for drug therapy for musculoskeletal disease.
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes, and frequency of administration of medications to treat musculoskeletal disorders based on relevant individual client parameters.
- Evaluate possible uses of vitamins and herbal supplements as they relate to musculoskeletal disease management.
Pain Management
- Classify common pharmacological and therapeutic options in managing pain.
- Analyze pertinent federal and state statutes and regulations in relationship to prescriptive privileges (CA Standardized P&P).
- Justify correct dosages, dosage forms, routes, and frequency of administration of medications to treat painful conditions based on relevant individual client parameters.
