Health Information Systems –
This course provides administrators and managers an overview of the information systems used in the health care industry. The effective use of data requires an understanding of how the data is captured as well as the HIPAA and security issues related to this confidential material. The course provides students with a general background to communicate more effectively with technical personnel and provide general management oversight of information systems within health care organizations.

Evolution and Application of Health Care Information Systems
- Distinguish major events and technological advantages that influenced current HCIS practices.
- Identify various clinical and administrative applications of IT in health care organizations.
- Describe typical components of a health care IT department.
Data Collection and Records
- Describe data elements related to various types of hospital and physician, office, and patient encounters.
- Differentiate between the uses of patient data to support clinical and research needs.
- Evaluate the functions, limitations, and significance of the EMR.
- Differentiate among the five levels of computerized patient records.
Patient Information: Privacy and Security
- Discuss the role of the manager and HIPAA and patient privacy compliance.
- Describe the management plan for natural disasters or security breaches.
- Identify ethical and legal accessibility issues of sharing EMRs.
IT Organization and Alignment for Healthcare
- Assess the impact of data quality on patient care, reimbursements, and clinical research.
- Describe effective data quality review and maintenance procedures.
- Examine the impact of the manager’s use of data to make decisions.
System Acquisition and Implementation
- Describe how the RFP process is used in the system acquisition process.
- Distinguish key elements of successful IT project management.
- Distinguish key elements of the system development life cycle.
- Assess factors that contribute to IT project failure.
- Assess the impact of using the Internet to communicate patient-specific information.
- Discuss the impact of distance delivery on health care.
