Course Description

This course provides an overview of the principal social, cultural, political, economic, and global developments that shaped Western civilization from prehistory to the Middle Ages. It presents a framework for understanding current social experience by applying historical perspectives to contemporary issues. After the course you will be able to bring historical knowledge to the solution of contemporary issues.

Topics and Objectives

The Study of History

  • Review the varying approaches to the study of history.
  • Recognize the philosophical problems of documenting history (e.g., objectivity, choice of sources, and bias).
  • Identify problems unique to the study of our past.

Prehistory

  • Explain the concept of civilization and early evidence of its existence.
  • Discuss social, cultural, and economic developments.
  • Examine the contravening trends that eroded the socio-cultural dynamics of the era.

Early Civilizations

  • Discuss social, cultural, political, and economic developments of Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, and Palestine.
  • Examine the contravening trends that eroded the socio-cultural dynamics of each period.

Early Greece

  • Discuss social, cultural, political, and economic developments of the Minoans, Mycenaeans, and Archaic Greek cultures.
  • Examine the contravening trends that eroded the socio-cultural dynamics of each period.

Classical Greece

  • Discuss social, cultural, political, and economic developments of the era.
  • Examine the contravening trends that eroded the socio-cultural dynamics of the era.

Hellenistic Greece

  • Discuss social, cultural, political, and economic developments of the era.
  • Examine the contravening trends that eroded the socio-cultural dynamics of the era.

Ancient Rome

  • Discuss political, economic, social, and cultural developments of the era.

The Byzantine Empire
