Course Description

This course provides an overview of the principal social, cultural, political, economic, and global developments that shaped Western civilization from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. It also presents a framework for understanding current social experience by applying historical perspectives to contemporary issues.

Topics and Objectives

The High and Late Middle Ages – Western Society Emerges

  • Compare manorialism, feudalism, and the rise of the medieval town.

  • Explain the role of clerics in politics, society, and the rise of the Universities.

  • Compare the value system of the warrior class to the rest of medieval society.

  • Discuss the role each estate played in the Crusades.

The Renaissance and Reformation

  • Explain the consequences of the Black Death on Western society
  • Identify leading figures in art, politics, and culture during the Renaissance period.

  • Outline the major events that led to the Reformation and its aftermath.

Dynamic Changes in the 16th Century

  • Identify the motivations behind the expansion of Spain into the New World.
  • Describe the events that led to the rise of Spain as a superpower.
  • Outline the rise of the Tudor dynasty.

An Era of Revolution and Change

  • Summarize the political, religious, cultural, and social issues surrounding the wars for religion.

  • Compare the political paths of England and France in the 17th century.

The Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution

  • Identify important events and people of the Scientific Revolution.

  •  Identify the important concepts of the Enlightenment.

  • Summarize the European nation-states’ colonial expansion and the ensuing conflicts.
