This course prepares students to evaluate the legal risks associated with business consulting. Students will create proposals to manage an individual's legal exposure when performing consulting work. Other topics include the legal system, alternative dispute resolution, enterprise liability, international law, business risks, intellectual property, legal forms of business, and governance.

  • The Legal System and the Legal Forms of Business

    • Explain the major components of the legal system.
    • Differentiate among the legal forms of business.
    • Differentiate among nonjudicial methods of alternative dispute resolution.
  • Torts

    • Identify potential tort risks that arise in the business context.
    • Apply the risk management process to mitigate business risk.
    • Differentiate among types of torts.
    • Determine appropriate situations to involve legal counsel in potential tort issues.
  • Contracts

    • Identify the elements necessary to form contracts.
    • Identify the major principles of contract administration.
    • Determine appropriate methods for contract dispute resolution.
  • Employment and Regulatory Risk

    • Differentiate among types of employment relationships and associated legal considerations.
    • Differentiate among types of discriminatory issues and their associated legal considerations.
    • Determine methods for managing legal risk arising from regulatory compliance issues.
  • Property and Governance

    • Differentiate among personal, real, and intellectual property issues.
    • Determine appropriate methods to address potential property risks.
    • Identify applicable regulatory compliance requirements for business situations.
    • Evaluate organizational adherence with corporate governance principles.
  • Legal Issues in International and Domestic Business

    • Evaluate legal risks associated with domestic business activity.
    • Evaluate legal risks associated with international business activity.
