Information Literacy In School Libraries And Media Centers –

This course is designed to focus on the school library media specialist’s role as the information literacy specialist. Participants explore foundational concepts of information literacy applicable to K–12 curriculum. Additionally, participants examine research methods and processes, instruction and evaluation techniques, and assessment for teaching information literacy.
This graduate-level course is 6 weeks. This course is available as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.
  • Designing Instruction for Academic Research

    • Identify tools and techniques for guiding the research process.
    • Create lessons that facilitate the research process.
    • Develop a tool to align school library media center resources to classroom instruction through collaboration.
  • Designing Instruction for Literature Searches

    • Identify strategies that facilitate learner engagement in reading.
    • Develop methods for teaching effective literature search skills.
  • Information Literacy

    • Describe information literacy as it applies to K–12 curriculum.
    • Identify the development of information literacy.
    • Justify the need to teach students information literacy.
    • Describe the role of the school library media specialist as a teacher and collaborator.
  • Information Literacy Assessment

    • Assess instructional strategies that promote literacy.
    • Develop strategies to evaluate research materials.
    • Develop strategies to assess student learning.
  • Information Literacy Foundations

    • Differentiate learning theory models.
    • Apply a learning theory model to information literacy instruction.
    • Assess strategies for teaching critical thinking.
    • Select strategies for addressing diverse learners.
  • Review
