MAT 115 (Basic Mathematics) focuses on a foundational understanding of basic mathematics principles, including arithmetic, decimals, fractions, percentages, linear equations with one and two variables, and simple geometry.

  • Percents/Geometry and Measure

    • Perform conversions among fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percentages.
    • Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of a missing side of a right triangle.
    • Find the square root of a number.
    • Differentiate among right, acute, and obtuse angles.
    • Find the measure of angles.
    • Recognize lines and line segments.
    • Perform operations with denominate numbers.
    • Perform conversions between English and metric units of measure.
    • Calculate equivalent measures for English and metric units of measure, weight, and volume.
    • Determine the percent of increase or decrease in an application.

    • Write the ratio of two quantities in simplest form.
  • Operations on Whole Numbers

    • Calculate the perimeter and area of specified geometric figures.
    • Solve mathematical problems using the concepts of exponentiation and order of operations.
    • Round decimals to the nearest whole number.
    • Determine the place value of a digit.
    • Perform the basic mathematical functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

    • Solve mathematical problems using fraction basics.
    • Find the prime factorization and greatest common factor (GCF) of numbers.
    • Determine the divisibility of a number.
    • Apply the basic mathematical functions of multiplication and division to fractions.
    • Perform conversions between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
    • Identify prime and composite numbers.
    • List the factors of a number.
  • Decimals

    • Compare the sizes of common fractions and decimals.
    • Perform conversions between fractions and numbers.
    • Find the perimeter, circumference, and area of specified geometric figures.
    • Apply basic mathematical functions to decimals.
    • Round decimals to any specified decimal place.
    • Write a decimal as a fraction or mixed number.
  • Data Analysis and Statistics

    • Summarize data sets.
    • Create graphs and charts.
    • Interpret tables, graphs, and charts.
    • Calculate the mean, median, and mode of data sets.
  • Basic Mathematical Concepts

    • Apply a variety of basic mathematical concepts to mathematical problems.
  • Adding and Subtracting Fractions

    • Solve applications involving mixed numbers.
    • Identify the least common multiple (LCM) of numbers.
    • Apply the basic mathematical functions of addition and subtraction to fractions with both like and unlike denominators.
