MMPBL540 Conflict Management

Course Description

This course prepares the manager to identify problems and opportunities arising from conflict among parties and stakeholders in organizations, to analyze those problems in detail, and to design and implement successful solutions to benefit from the opportunities and achieve the desired end state for the organization. Topics include the legal and regulatory environment of the employment relationship; the process of conflict and how it impacts organizations; and the application of negotiation, mediation, and other non-judicial dispute resolution techniques to resolve conflict to benefit the organization and stakeholders.

Key Concepts of Employment Conflict Management

  • Identify the nature and causes of conflict.
  • Describe the impact of conflict on organizations.
  • Identify methods used by organizations to manage conflict.
  • Explain the major principles of employment and labor law.

Alternative Solutions to Manage Employment Conflict

  • Analyze sources of conflict arising out of employment and labor law.
  • Evaluate the role of organizational power structures in creating conflict.
  • Compare and contrast alternative dispute resolution processes, including mediation, arbitration and negotiation.

Critical Analysis of Employment Conflict Resolution

  • Select the most effective alternative processes to resolve organizational conflict.
  • Create a plan to implement appropriate alternative conflict resolution processes.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the selected conflict resolution process.

Key Concepts of Non-Employment Conflict Management

  • Identify non-employment disputes that arise in organizations.
  • Examine how conflict arises as a result of competing values.
  • Differentiate between constructive and destructive conflict styles.

Alternative Solutions to Manage Non-Employment Conflict

  • Analyze how various non-judicial dispute resolution processes can be applied to non-employment conflicts.
  • Evaluate organizational conflict management systems.
  • Analyze risks associated with organizational conflict management systems.

Critical Analysis of Non-Employment Conflict Resolution

  • Create conflict management systems that mitigate and resolve disputes between an organization and external entities.
  • Develop a plan to implement conflict management systems.
  • Create metrics to measure the effectiveness of conflict management systems.
