The Art And Science Of Teaching –

This course introduces teaching as both an art and a science. Topics for discussion include an historical overview, basic philosophies, professionalism, legal/ethical ramifications, in addition to trends and issues in education. Students will reflect on their motivations to teach and will begin developing a personal philosophy of education.

This graduate-level course is 4 weeks. This course may be available to take individually or as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.
  • Basic Philosophies of Education

    • Examine educational philosophies.
    • Relate educational philosophies to classroom practice.
    • Develop a personal philosophy of education.
  • Foundations of Education

    • Identify the basic foundations of education.
    • Examine teaching as an art and as a science.
  • Historical Overview of Education in America

    • Examine the history of American education.
    • Examine the federal and state government's involvement in education.
    • Describe the organizational structure of the American educational system.
  • Professionalism

    • Examine issues associated with teaching as a career choice.
    • Determine how a teacher's personal background, experiences, and professional dispositions affect teaching methods and learning styles.
    • Identify the components and the uses of professional teacher portfolios.
    • Relate the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession to personal beliefs about teaching.
    • Describe professional development opportunties for elementary teachers.

    • Review the University of Phoenix program standards.
  • Trends and Issues in Education

    • Identify educational issues facing schools and teachers.
    • Examine legal and ethical issues in education.
    • Analyze trends and issues related to increased student diversity.
    • Analyze the characteristics of effective schools.
    • Examine the use of technology as a resource in the classroom.
