This course explores the theory, application, and strategies of teaching the visual and performing arts in middle and secondary school. Participants identify the educational needs of students by exploring current instructional theory, national and state standards, assessment practices, aesthetic valuing, artistic perception, and historical and cultural origins that impact the arts. The course also helps prospective educators develop skills in adapting delivery methods and behavior management plans for individual students and diverse populations. The course will also emphasize classroom management skills and use of technology as they relate to visual and performing arts instruction.
This graduate-level course is 6 weeks. This course may be available to take individually or as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.
  • Classroom Assessments and Rubrics

    • Evaluate the characteristics of effective visual and performing arts assessment.

    • Analyze formative and summative visual and performing arts assessments and rubrics.

    • Construct an open-ended assessment.

  • History and Trends in Visual and Performing Arts Education

    • Explain a rationale that supports visual and performing arts in the secondary curriculum.

    • Explain historical perspectives and trends in visual and performing arts.

    • Examine current themes and trends in the teaching of visual and performing arts.

  • Instructional Approaches and Strategies

    • Apply approaches to unit and lesson planning in teaching visual and performing arts.

    • Propose innovative instructional strategies and materials used to teach visual and performing arts to adolescents.

    • Analyze ways in which differentiating instruction occurs in the visual and performing arts classroom.

    • Identify ways in which classroom management techniques can enhance the visual and performing arts classroom.

    • Analyze effective motivational techniques to engage visual and performing arts students.

    • Develop an instructional unit for visual and performing arts.

  • Integrating Literature, Technology, and Media

    • Analyze the legal and ethical issues regarding the use of technology in the classroom.

    • Compile a list of fiction and nonfiction literature to enhance the teaching of visual and performing arts.

    • Explore various technologies and media that can be used to support visual and performing arts instruction.

    • Evaluate visual and performing arts materials and equipment appropriate for integrating art into classroom instruction.

    • Integrate literature into a visual and performing arts lesson.

  • Parent, Teacher, and Community Collaboration

    • Explore strategies to utilize community resources in the visual and performing arts classroom.

    • Explore the range of social, health, educational, and language-related service agencies and other resources that are available at school and off campus.

    • Examine how family and personal experiences shape teaching/learning perceptions in the visual and performing arts classroom.

    • Explain the importance of parent/teacher communication and collaboration.

    • Determine strategies for increasing the level of parental involvement.

  • Professional Development

    • Review the roles of visual and performing arts professional organizations.

    • Analyze professional resources available to visual and performing arts teachers.

    • Identify professional development opportunities in visual and performing arts available in your state.

    • Analyze the importance of staying current in visual and performing arts education.

  • Reading and Writing Strategies

    • Evaluate current visual and performing arts texts.

    • Describe methods to incorporate reading and writing strategies into visual and performing arts lessons.

    • Explain strategies for building students’ comprehension and vocabulary skills in visual and performing arts.

    • Incorporate reading and writing strategies in a visual and performing arts lesson.

  • Review of Visual and Performing Arts Education Content Knowledge

    • Explain the components of quality arts programs or curriculum: criticism, history, production, and aesthetics.

    • Apply appropriate vocabulary to identify and describe visual and performing arts.

    • Examine your state’s teacher licensure examinations for visual and performing arts education.

    • Explain the elements and principles of design as they apply to visual and performing arts.

  • Standards and Curricula

    • Identify the national standards and state standards in visual arts, dance/movement, music, and drama.

    • Describe the progression of P–12 state standards in visual and performing arts.

    • Describe the importance of curriculum mapping in planning and preparation.
