Curriculum Constructs And Assessment: Secondary Mathematics –

This course explores the secondary mathematics classroom, curriculum, and teaching and assessment strategies. Participants identify the educational needs of secondary students by exploring current instructional theory, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, state standards, and social issues that impact the mathematics classroom. The course also helps prospective educators develop skills in selecting and adapting instruction for diverse student populations. The course will also emphasize classroom management skills as they relate to mathematics instruction.
This graduate-level course is 6 weeks. This course may be available to take individually or as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.
  • Classroom Assessment and Rubrics

    • Evaluate the characteristics of effective mathematics assessment.
    • Analyze formative and summative mathematics assessments and rubrics.
    • Construct an open-ended assessment.
  • History and Trends in Mathematics Education

    • Research professional organizations that shape and guide math practices.
    • Analyze research in the teaching and learning of mathematics and its implications for instruction.
    • Explain historical perspectives and trends in the study of mathematics.
    • Examine current themes and trends in the teaching of mathematics.
  • Instructional Approaches and Strategies

    • Review approaches to unit and lesson planning in teaching mathematics.
    • Propose innovative instructional strategies and materials used to teach mathematics to adolescents.
    • Analyze ways in which differentiating instruction occurs in the mathematics classroom.
    • Identify ways in which classroom management techniques can enhance the mathematics classroom.
    • Utilize appropriate instructional strategies and materials that enhance students’ conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts.
    • Implement strategies for teaching effective lessons through the use of problem-solving techniques.
    • Use questioning techniques that develop students’ higher-order thinking skills.
    • Analyze effective motivational techniques to engage mathematics students.
    • Apply knowledge of mathematical reasoning, communication, connections, and representations in an instructional plan.
    • Develop an instructional unit for math.
  • Integrating Literature, Technology, and Media

    • Integrate literature into a mathematics lesson.
    • Investigate effective uses of graphing calculators, computers, mathematical software, and the Internet in the classroom.
    • Analyze the legal and ethical issues regarding the use of technology in the classroom.
    • Develop a plan to integrate instructional technology tools in the mathematics classroom.
    • Compile a list of fiction and non-fiction literature to enhance the teaching of mathematics.
  • Parent, Teacher and Community Collaboration

    • Explore strategies to utilize community resources in the mathematics classroom.
    • Explore the range of social, health, educational and language-related service agencies and other resources that are available at school and off-campus.
    • Examine how family and personal experiences shape teaching/learning perceptions in the mathematics classroom.
    • Explain the importance of parent/teacher communication and collaboration.
    • Determine strategies for increasing the level of parental involvement.
  • Professional Development

    • Review the roles of mathematics professional organizations.
    • Analyze professional resources available to mathematics teachers.
    • Identify professional development opportunities in mathematics available in your state.
    • Analyze the importance of staying current in mathematics education.
  • Reading and Writing Strategies

    • Evaluate current mathematics texts.
    • Describe methods to incorporate reading and writing strategies into mathematics lessons.
    • Examine strategies for building students’ comprehension and vocabulary skills in mathematics.
    • Implement reading and writing strategies in a math lesson.
  • Review of Math Education Content Knowledge

    • Review Number and Operation.
    • Research different perspectives on Algebra.
    • Review Geometries.
    • Review Calculus.
    • Review Discrete Mathematics.
    • Examine Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability.
    • Review Measurement.
    • Examine your state’s teacher licensure examinations for secondary mathematics education.
