This course explores the application of basic instructional methods to the content area of English and language arts in middle school and high school settings. Participants identify the educational needs of middle level and secondary students by exploring current instructional theory, models, and strategies; state, local, and national standards as they relate to instruction, assessment, and accountability; and social issues that impact reading, listening, speaking, and writing in the classroom. The course also helps prospective educators develop skills in selecting and adapting delivery methods and behavior management plans for diverse individual students and student populations.
This graduate-level course is 6 weeks.

- Identify forms of classroom assessment and implications for planning instruction.
- Recognize the elements of effective rubric development for various instructional activities.

- Identify current themes and trends in the teaching of English.

- Identify strategies for promoting positive learning environments in English and language arts classrooms.
- Propose innovative instructional strategies and materials used to teach English to adolescents.
- Analyze instructional strategies that meet the learning needs of diverse students.
- Consider how to integrate English and language arts skills with other subject areas.
- Describe instructional strategies that help students become familiar with their own and others cultures.
- Select appropriate, research-based resources that support English and language arts instruction.
- Utilize state and national standards to create lesson plans and develop units of study.

- Examine traditional literature studyAmerican, British and worldincluding literary criticism, theory, and terminology.
- Explore multicultural literature, young adult literature, and literature of diversity including that by women.
- Develop strategies for expanding student literacy through the study of a wide variety of genres.
- Utilize state standards to define the skills students must develop to read and respond to a variety of texts critically.
- Analyze the influence of visual and print media in society and its effect on learning.
- Apply the use of print and nonprint media and communication technology in instruction.
- Develop strategies for establishing critical reading skills for various media.
- Analyze the legal and ethical issues regarding the use of technology in the classroom.
- Incorporate the use of technology in English and language arts instruction.
- Compile a list of fiction and nonfiction literature to enhance the teaching of English.

- Explore strategies to utilize community resources in the English classroom.
- Explore the range of social, health, educational, and language-related service agencies, and other resources that are available at school and off-campus.
- Examine how family and personal experiences shape teaching and learning perceptions in the English classroom.
- Explain the importance of parent/teacher communication and collaboration.
- Determine strategies for increasing the level of parental involvement.

- Review the roles of English and language arts professional organizations.
- Analyze professional resources available to English teachers.
- Identify professional development opportunities in English available in your state.
- Analyze the importance of staying current in English education.

- Explore literacy study including major aspects of written, oral, and visual literacy.
- Examine reading processes for understanding text including critical analysis and meaning-making strategies.
- Evaluate current English texts.

- Examine strategies for building students comprehension and vocabulary skills in reading.
- Develop strategies for helping students become reflective readers.
- Define the developmental stages of writing.
- Examine the writing processes for different purposes, situations, and audiences.

- Review language development and acquisition including history of the English language.
- Review language structure and skills including grammar systems and semantics.
- Examine your states teacher licensure examinations for English and language arts education.

- Understand the progression of P12 state standards in English and language arts.
- Review state and national English standards and assessments.
- Review the Content and Content Pedagogy Components of the National Council of Teachers of English Standards.
