Management Of Pediatric And Adolescent Populations –

This course focuses on the management of normal and common pathological conditions for children from birth through adolescence, as an individual and as a family member. The course combines theory and clinical experiences to emphasize assessment, prevention, and management utilizing a holistic model of care. Growth and development, anticipatory guidance, and behavioral theories are emphasized. Identification and application of pharmacological therapies are incorporated. The effects of culture on development, parenting, and health care practices are also evaluated.

This graduate-level course is 15 weeks. This course is available as part of a degree or certificate program. To enroll, speak with an enrollment advisor.
  • Application of Pediatric Principles

    • Integrate theory and physical assessment data to design a management plan for the pediatric client.
  • Children with Cardiovascular Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of cardiovascular systems.
    • Design a management plan for a child with a cardiovascular disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with a cardiovascular disorder.
  • Children with Dermatologic Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of the dermatologic system.
    • Design a management plan for a child with a dermatologic disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with a dermatologic disorder.
  • Children with Developmental or Behavioral Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of developmental or behavioral disorders.
    • Design a management plan for a child with developmental or behavioral disorders.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with developmental or behavioral disorders.
  • Children with Endocrine Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of the endocrine system.
    • Design a management plan for a child with an endocrine disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with an endocrine disorder.
  • Children with Gastrointestinal or Genitourinary Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of gastrointestinal or genitourinary systems.
    • Design a management plan for a child with a gastrointestinal or genitourinary disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with gastrointestinal or genitourinary disorder.
  • Children with Hematologic Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of hematologic systems.
    • Design a management plan for a child with a hematologic disorder.

  • Children with Infectious Diseases

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of the infectious systems.
    • Design a management plan for a child with an infectious disorder.

  • Children with Orthopedic Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of the orthopedic system.
    • Design a management plan for a child with an orthopedic disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with an orthopedic disorder.
  • Children with Respiratory Disorders

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of respiratory systems.
    • Design a management plan for a child with a respiratory disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with a respiratory disorder.
  • Family Theory, Structure, and Issues

    • Apply the elements of family-centered care to various case studies.
    • Analyze issues in today's society that place children and their families at risk.
    • Analyze the financial and psychosocial demands of acute and chronic illness on the family.
  • Neurological and HEENT

    • Analyze presenting symptoms for the identification and diagnosis of neurological or head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat (HEENT) systems.
    • Design a management plan for a child with a neurological or HEENT disorder.
    • Illustrate the use of community resources available for children with neurological or HEENT disorder.
  • Newborns, Infants and Toddlers

    • Identify the appropriate anticipatory guidelines for the newborn, infancy, and toddler stages.
  • Overview of Pediatric Care

    • Define key family-centered care concepts specific to caring for children.
    • Utilize and interpret growth charts.
    • Identify the norms in the newborn exam.
    • Calculate drug dosages utilizing pediatric principles.
  • Preschool, School Age, and Adolescents

    • Identify the appropriate anticipatory guidelines for the preschool, school age, and adolescent stages.
