This course focuses on the utilization of nursing theory with the obstetrical client and family. Sixty hours of planned faculty-supervised experiences in the clinical area as well as the community will provide students with the opportunity to implement their knowledge and skills related to OB client. Students are required to successfully complete 60 clinical hours as well as successfully complete the predictor exam to pass the course.

Topics and Objectives

Nursing Management of the Expectant Family during Uncomplicated Pregnancy
- Discuss the components of completing a nursing assessment of the pregnant client and family.
- Describe the physiologic and psychological changes that occur during pregnancy.
- Develop a plan of care for the expectant family.
- Identify the developmental challenges and special physical, psychological, and social risks of the pregnant adolescent.
- Explain the concept of family-centered care and how this impacts nursing care of the pregnant client and family
Nursing Management of the Expectant Family during Complicated Pregnancy
- Describe the effects of selected pregestational and gestational medical conditions.
- Employ nursing interventions and educational opportunities for high-risk pregnant patients.
- Formulate a plan of care to meet the needs of the client/family with a prenatal complication.
- Identify anticipated laboratory tests, name normal values, and relevance of impact.
Nursing Management of the Client during Labor and Delivery
- Employ nursing care during selected procedures on the childbearing woman and for her family or support system.
- Identify signs and symptoms of intrapartum complications and employ nursing interventions to manage them.
Nursing Management of the Client during the Postpartum Period
- Describe the physical, psychological, and developmental tasks that the mother must accomplish during the postpartum period.
- Describe nursing interventions for a normal versus a complicated postpartum period.
- Delineate nursing responsibilities for clients teaching during the early postpartum period.
- Explain the process of lactation and list the pros and cons of breastfeeding.
- Identify signs and symptoms relative to postpartum depression and its effect on the family unit.
Nursing Management of the Newborn
- Determine appropriate nursing interventions for the low-risk newborn.
- Relate the consequences of maternal substance abuse to the care of the newborn.
- Describe the components of nursing care for the newborn with problems related to maturity or size.
- Identify the initial and long-term special needs of parents of at-risk infants.
