Course Description

This course focuses on the professional role and discipline of nursing. Students will examine the image of nursing and develop strategies for improvement. Standards of professional practice will be discussed in relation to the profession, role, and value behavior.

Topics and Objectives

The Nursing Profession

  • Identify growth and change that have contributed to the development of the nursing profession.
  • Differentiate characteristics between a profession and an occupation.
  • Apply HIPAA regulations

Role Transition and Professional Development

  • Discuss time and stress management techniques as it relates to personal and professional challenges.
  • Describe the concept of critical thinking.

Roles

  • Explore new role opportunities for the professional nurse.
  • Develop a plan to achieve personal and professional goals.

Trends in Nursing

  • Identify trends in health care and nursing practice.

Theoretical Basis for Nursing Practice

  • Identify the connection of professional nursing practice to nursing theory.
