Course Description
This course is designed to focus baccalaureate students on the behaviors, attitudes, and values necessary for theory-based professional nursing practice. Concepts of professional nursing are presented within the unifying framework of Jean Watson's Theory of Caring.
Topics and Objectives
Essentials of Professional Nursing Practice
- Identify personal and professional behaviors, attitudes, and values relating to patients and health care providers.
- Discuss the scientific basis of nursing knowledge through the nursing process.
Integration of Theory Into Nursing Practice
- Define the major concepts essential to nursing theories.
- Identify the purpose and use of nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes.
Nursing Philosophies, Models, and Theories
- Define the relationship between nursing philosophies, models, and theories.
- Examine the major nursing theories and their key concepts.
Watson’s Theory
- Examine Watson’s theory in relation to behaviors, attitudes, and values of professional practice.
- Integrate Watson’s theory in relation to patient or community care.
Development of Future Nursing Theory
- Discuss the past, present, and future impact of nursing theory on nursing practice.
