This course focuses on pathophysiology, principles of motivation, learning theories, and their application to disease processes. A review of diseases from a systems approach will be stressed along with discussions regarding the impact of diversity, delivery of patient education, complementary and alternative therapies, and community resources.

  • Learning Theory

    • Describe the effects of chronic disease on individuals and society.
    • Describe theories of motivation and learning for the management of patients with chronic diseases.
    • Apply Bloom’s Taxonomy in patient education.
  • Endocrinology, Immunology, and Malignant Processes

    • Identify educational outcomes related to pathophysiology of the endocrine system, immunological system, and malignant processes.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.
    • Evaluate available resources for patients with endocrine disorders, immunological system disorders, and malignant processes.
    • Identify options in complementary and alternative therapies for patients with endocrine disorders, immunological system disorders, and malignant processes.
  • Psychoneurological System, Cardiac, and Respiratory System

    • Identify educational outcomes related to pathophysiology of psychoneurological, cardiac, and respiratory disorders.

    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.

    • Evaluate available resources for patients with endocrine disorders, immunological system disorders, and malignant processes.
    • Identify options in complementary and alternative therapies for patients with endocrine disorders, immunological system disorders, and malignant processes.
  • Gastrointestinal and Genitourinary Systems

    • Identify educational outcomes related to the pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.

    • Evaluate available resources for patients with gastrointestinal and genitourinary disorders.
    • Identify options including complementary and alternative therapies for patients with gastrointestinal and genitourinary disorders.
  • Eyes and Ears

    • Identify educational outcomes related to the pathophysiology as it relates to the eyes and ears.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.

    • Evaluate available resources for patients with disorders of the eyes and ears.
    • Identify options including complementary and alternative therapies for patients with disorders of the eyes and ears.
