Dimensions Of Community Nursing Practice – nur471pn (3 credits)
This course provides the foundation for developing and using theory-based practice in the health promotion of population aggregates and communities. Based on community and public health nursing standards and nursing conceptual frameworks, students learn skills to address populations at risk. Utilizing the epidemiological model, students identify levels of prevention and apply health promotion strategies to community health problems. Current social and economic issues are explored. Journaling and group activities facilitate the exploration of social responsibility as a professional value. Five weeks provide the framework for the development of skills for community-focused practice.

Social and Economic Influences on Health Care Delivery
- Discuss various quality improvements as a means to meet societal demands for an efficient and effective health care system.
- Explain why effective community and public health nursing managers, leaders, and consultants are needed in today's health care environment.
- Examine the financing of health care with respect to current health care trends.
Ethics and Values
- Examine social responsibility as a professional value for community and public health nursing practice.
- Identify ethical constructs in community and public health nursing practice.
- Formulate a personal statement of one significant social change that is needed to promote healthier communities.
Community as Context for Nursing
- Identify the concept of community as the client.
- Discuss the interface between family and community and public health nursing practice.

Epidemiology and Communicable Disease
- Define epidemiology and surveillance and discuss the functions and elements of each.
- Identify primary and secondary data sources for epidemiological and surveillance activities.
- Apply the epidemiological process to a population-focused problem.
- Integrate levels of prevention and community and public health nursing roles as applied to a selected epidemiological problem.
- Describe primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions related to potential and actual threats to environmental health.
Aggregates and Vulnerable Populations at Risk
- Define vulnerability and relate this concept to a selected population group.
- Identify community and public health nursing roles in assessing, planning, and implementing care for selected vulnerable populations at both the community and policy level.
- Identify the impacts of cultural and minority status on health.
