Clinical Integration: Partnership In Community Practice –

This course focuses on the utilization of theory-based practice to promote the care of population aggregates and communities. Students complete 60 hours of practicum, which provides experiences with aggregates, public health, and community health in a variety of settings in order to develop the professional roles of caregiver, teacher, and manager of care. Through the clinical practicum, the student develops beginning skills in community education, coalition building, community assessment, and the use of computerized databases. Violence as a health care problem and health care financing are examined as examples of current issues affecting communities. Social responsibility as a professional value is also covered. Clinical integration and application of theories introduced in the community course are the frameworks for this course. Students are required to successfully complete 60 clinical hours to pass this course.

Topics and Objectives

Community Assessment
- Differentiate between community, community health, community as client, and partnerships for health.
- Determine community assessment evaluation methods and techniques.
- Describe the effect of community partnerships on the health of the community.
Community Health Education
- Evaluate the health of a community aggregate.
- Determine the health education needs of a community aggregate.
- Apply Orem’s Self-Care Theory to community health nursing practice.
Community Partnerships and Coalitions for Health
- Identify the community resources at the local, state, national, and international levels.
- Describe the role of coalitions and community planning groups in community partnerships.
Health Care System Delivery
- Describe factors that affect the problem of violence in American communities.
- Examine health care delivery with vulnerable and high risk population aggregates.
Economics of Disease Prevention
- Compare and contrast the financial expenditures related to the three levels of prevention.
- Explain the effect of national health care reform, financing, and direct service delivery in the community health setting.
Community Intervention and Evaluation
- Describe the role of community evaluation in addressing the health care needs of communities and population aggregates.
- Determine opportunities for community health research.
- Determine evaluation methods and techniques in community health.
Public Policy Development
- Describe the role of the community nurse as a partner in public policy development.
