This course focuses on the use of theory-based practice with the obstetrical client and newborn's family. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of normal reproductive and child bearing events and health assessment of the child bearing woman. Students are required to successfully complete 45 clinical hours to pass the course.

Nursing Management of the Newborn
- Identify the initial and long-term special needs of parents of at-risk infants.
- Describe the components of nursing care for the newborn with problems related to maturity or size
- Relate the consequences of maternal substance abuse to the care of the newborn
- Determine appropriate nursing interventions for the low-risk newborn

Nursing Management of the Client during the Postpartum Period
- Identify signs and symptoms relative to postpartum depression and its impact on the family unit.
- Explain the process of lactation and list the pros and cons of breastfeeding.
- Delineate nursing responsibilities for client teaching during the early postpartum period.
- Describe nursing interventions for normal versus complicated post partum period.
- Describe the physical, psychological, and developmental tasks that the mother must accomplish during the postpartum period.

- Identify signs and symptoms of intrapartum complications and employ nursing interventions to manage them.
- Employ nursing care during selected procedures on the childbearing woman and her family or support system.
- Differentiate the major types of pain management, including area affected, methods, advantages, disadvantages, and nursing implications.
- Describe the physiological and psychological changes that occur during labor and the appropriate nursing interventions.

Nursing Management of the Expectant Family during Complicated Pregnancy
- Formulate a plan of care to meet the needs of the client/family with a prenatal complication.
- Employ nursing interventions and educational opportunities for high-risk pregnant patients.
- Describe the effects of selected pre-gestational and gestational medical conditions.

Nursing Management of the Expectant Family during Uncomplicated Pregnancy
- Explain the concept of family-centered care and how this impacts nursing care of the pregnant client and family.
- Identify the developmental challenges and special physical, psychological, and social risks of the pregnant adolescent.
- Develop a plan of care for the expectant family.
- Describe the physiologic and psychological changes that occur during pregnancy.
- Discuss the components of completing a nursing assessment of the pregnant client and family.
